What is Characteristics of Alkali-soil?

The characteristics of alkaline soil are as follows:

(1) Alkaline soil has acidity (pH) greater than -7.

(2) This soil is high in calcium, magnesium and sodium.

(3) Alkaline soils are generally deficient in copper, boron and zinc.

(4) Phosphorus deficiency is usually seen in this class of soil.

(5) Solubility of iron and manganese is less in alkaline soil.

(6) Decomposition of organic matter is reduced due to disruption of microbial activity in such soils.

(7) Exchangeable sodium is greater than 15%.

(8) An excess of sodium in these soils causes toxicity.

(9) Alkaline soils contain less silt or clay particles and organic matter.

(10) Crops like dates, palm, coconut, sugarcane and pulses grow well in alkaline soils.
