Concept of seed

Any physical or genetic part of a plant or suitable environment capable of giving rise to new plants with similar characteristics is called a seed. Generally, the fertilized and mature ovule is called a seed, consisting of three main parts namely seed coat, endosperm, and embryo, which in due course give rise to a new plant. Endosperm is the storage organ for a food substance that nourishes the embryo during its development. The seed coat is the outer cover that protects or shields the embryo and endosperm. However, in the language of agriculture, seeds have a wider meaning. Any part of a plant that has the ability to grow new plants under favorable conditions is considered a seed. For example, in the case of rice, rice seeds; in the case of sugarcane, sugarcane stalks; banana pulp; round potato tubers, etc., are included in agricultural seeds. Seeds are the means of plant propagation.
